1934 Stop Thief Board Game

Can the Thief outwit the Police? This is the question asked by the game Stop Thief. The game was published in 1934 by Einson Freeman Co. and was a board game for just two players.  It offers an interesting and entertaining way to spend time with a friend.

The game is set up a bit like a checkerboard, but with alternating spaces depicting city buildings and streets.  Players move around these in attempts to achieve their objective.

To play, one player takes the part of the Thief.  The other player takes the part of the 4 Policemen.  The Policemen game pieces begin on the four end spaces of the board below the Taxi Car Images.  The Thief begins on the other end of the board on the space marked, “Thief Starts Here”.

The objective for players is the following:

*The Thief attempts to sneak past the Policemen and will win the game if he can move into one the Policemen’s starting spaces at the top of the game board.

*The Policemen attempt to drive back the Thief and block him from movement. The Player of the Policemen will win the game if he disables the Thief from moving forward.

Players take turns moving a piece on the board.  The Thief is allowed to move in any direction, forward or backward.

A Policeman is ONLY allowed to move forward.

There is not allowed any jumping.  The game is played by merely moving and blocking.

The instructions say that after a few games, players begin to see the strategy involved and it becomes a game of ‘great skill’.  I’ve played a few times, and yes, it does.  Taking turns as Thief and Policemen mixes it up a bit too.

It is a fun game from long ago that gives an enjoyable evening of play.
