Three horses are shown racing off to a fire with the old time fire engine being pulled behind on the cover of the 1909 Fire Fighters Milton Bradley board game. With its colorful and historical scene, it is a great piece to add to any game or fireman’s collection and display.
Inside the box, the game board is found. It’s not exactly a game board though. It’s a sheet of paper pasted onto the bottom of the inside box. Many games of this age are like this. They utilize the bottom of the box to place the ‘game’.
The Fire Fighters’ game board illustrates 4 ladders reaching up to a window with a small girl in need of help. The game is for 2-4 players and the first player to reach the window at top of the board wins the game.
Fire Fighters is a simple race game with only a few obstacles. Players each begin at the base of one of the ladders and takes turn spinning the cardboard spinner with arrow. The numbers 1 thru 4 can be spun, but the directions state players can only move if 1,2, or 3 are spun, and move up the ladder accordingly.
On the way up the ladder are a few obstacles for players. They are two broken rungs and a space marked 30. If a player lands on a broken rung space on his ladder, he falls back 4 or 5 spaces. The number of spaces is indicated on his ladder. If a player lands on space 30, by exact count, it is said that the fire fighter has been overcome with smoke and is out for the rest of the game.
The player who reaches the window by exact spin is deemed the winner of the game!
Simple to play but a beautiful reminder of times past.
