Mcloughlin Diamonds and Hearts

Hearts adorn the outfits of the man and woman featured on the cover of the 1898 Game of Diamonds and Hearts. I question though, ‘why there aren’t any diamonds?’ No matter, it is another exceptional piece of artwork from Mcloughlin Bros. of New York

When opening the box cover, it is seen the game board is applied to the bottom of the box.  Resting on top is a spinner, 1 thru 6. Also are 10 small and 1 large red game pieces representing Hearts, and 10 small and 1 large white game pieces representing Diamonds.

On the game board is written Diamonds and Hearts OR Wealth and Worth.

To set up, each player places his small colored discs on the ten numbered spaces on his end of the board. Then each player places his larger game piece at the closest Heart or Diamond space depending the side.

The object of the game is to capture all of your opponent’s ten pieces first. This is accomplished by the spin and moving your larger game pieces around the center section.

A player spins and moves his Large game piece in attempt to land on a numbered space of his opponent’s type. If Hearts, the player tries to land on Diamond spaces. When he does, the opponent’s piece at the end of the board is removed. If Diamonds, the player does likewise, trying to capture Hearts.

If a player spins to land on a space occupied by his opponent, his turn ends. If a player captures an opponent’s piece, he spins again. If no piece is captured, the turn passes.

The first player who captures all, Wins!
