Who will be the Top Adventurer of DragonWood? This Card and Dice game for 2-4 players by GameWright is quick to learn, fun to play, and easy to get drawn into! Adventures await for those daring enough to enter DragonWood! (Available on Amazon)
In order to be named the Top Adventurer, you must first be daring enough to enter the enchanted forest of DragonWood. Here you will find fiery Dragons, wild boars, nasty goblins, and more! The adventurer who earns the most victory points by capturing these fierce creatures wins the game!
Here is how to play!
Within the box are 64 Advenuturer Cards, 42 DragonWood Cards, and 6 Dice. (along with instructions and such)
Players first create the DragonWood ‘Landscape’ by placing 5 of the DragonWood cards face up in the center of the table for all to see. The rest of the deck is set beside this layout to be drawn from. It is the pile used to refill the ‘Landscape’ as creatures and magical items in the forest get captured by players.
At the start of the game, each player/Adventurer is dealt 5 Adventurer Cards. This stack is also set aside for players to draw from during ‘reload’. They draw to ‘reload’ their hands.
To decide who goes first in the game, it is asked, who was the last to hike into the woods?
That person goes first and the adventure begins!
During a turn a player can either ‘Reload’ (draw an adventurer card) or Capture (try to take a card from the Landscape/DragonWood).
Players need to collect enough Adventurer Cards in their hand to create sets in order to capture from the Landscape.
The Cards in the Landscapes carry different requirements to be ‘captured’. For instance, if a player wanted to try and capture a Pack of Wolves to earn 3 Victory Points (shown on shield), then he would need either to:
Strike, Stomp, or Scream: (Strike requires players to play cards in row (of any color), To Stomp is to have all the same number, Scream is to have all same color)
He would need to have those cards of whichever method he chooses in his hand and lay them down in front of him. In this example, let’s say he has 3 cards with the same number in his hand, and so he is going to try and Stomp the pack of wolves to capture them.
To be successful in the capture, he needs to roll 3 dice that add up to 8.  If he had 4 cards all the same number to play, he could roll 4 dice, and so on.  On each card is a ‘sword, boot, or scream’ noting the required roll to ‘capture’ the card. As you see, to Strike, he would only need to roll a 7 to capture, but a 10 if he wanted to scream.
There are Magical Items in the DragonWood too. These provide enhancements. One example is the ‘Lucky Mushroom’. If you had captured that magical item in DragonWood, then you would gain it’s ‘enhancement’. You would be able to re-roll 1 die in capture attempts.
So there you basically have it! Players collect cards to capture items out of DragonWood! How they play, and what they collect, is a bit strategic.
The game ends when either the two Dragons of the wood are captured (these require a bit of strength from the Adventurers hand and luck of the roll) or it ends once the Adventure Deck has been gone through twice.
The winner is then the player with the most Victory Points!
