tales to play where the wild things areIn 2011, Patch Products, brought the adventures from the bestselling children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are, to the game table.  The pieces are absolutely adorable and kids love to play the game as much as they love the book.

The book, Where the Wild Things Are, was first published in 1963 by Maurice Sendak. Through the years it has won multiple awards and continues to be one of the best children’s picture books of all time.  Although the game is a simple race style game, like most children’s games are, there are still a few twists which make playing this game extra fun.

The pieces of course are highlight!  The game includes 4 ‘Max’ characters and 4 ‘Wild Things’ characters from the book. It also includes 4 scepters, 4 dice, 24 draw cards, and board.

To set up play, the Wild Things and scepters are placed on special marked areas on the board. Each player then chooses a Max Pawn and matching die of color for his playing piece.

One of the twists to the game is all players roll the dice on each turn, but ONLY the player rolling the highest die moves his Max. If there are two or more players with same high roll, they all move.

If players land on a space marked Wild Rumpus, he picks up a card and follow its directions.

When a player reaches the Wild Things area, he picks a Wild Thing character and places his pawn onto it. There is a slot for Max to sit at the base of a Wild Thing.  They will now move together.

When a player reaches the Rocky Hill area of the board, players will pick up their matching color scepter and place it in Max’s hand.

For both the Wild Things and Scepter area, players must stop.

The first player home wins!

Playing with the characters from the book makes this game so much fun.  Kids love to move Max and his Wild Thing around the board.  It’s sure to be hit!
