In 1925 Milton Bradley published a board game called the Game of Three Blind Mice. The cover depicts a Father Mouse with eye patch holding a cup that says, ‘Please help the Blind.’ There is also a Mother Mouse with spectacles, and a Baby Mouse following behind these two. They seem to be taking a stroll across the countryside.
When opening the box, the game board is seen pasted on the bottom of the box, which is common for the time. Six counters, three for each player, are used to travel around the board by use of a spinner. The object of the game is to be the first player to move his Three Mice (A Father, Mother, and Baby Mouse) from his home base, around the board, and back to home base. This is achieved by following simple enough rules.
The Nursery Rhyme the game is named after dates back to the early 1600’s. The most popular of lyrics being:
Three Blind Mice. Three Blind Mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer’s wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As Three Blind Mice.
Other than sharing the name, the game doesn’t seem to share anything more with the Nursery Rhyme. The board doesn’t depict any farmer’s wife, knife, and they all have their tails. Maybe the ‘see how run’ is the connection, if there is meant to be one.
No matter, it is a fun game to add to a collection!
